Printed Ephemera — 1939-02-17
Certificate
This is a certificate of naturalisation for Swiss-born Juliette Cousin. The process of naturalisation involved taking an Oath of Allegiance to the Crown. Naturalisation established Juliette's entitlement to 'all political and other rights and privileges' as well as her subjection to 'all obligations duties and liabilities, to which a natural-born British subject is entitled or subject'. Many immigrants to the UK applied to become naturalised British citizens during World Wars I and II. As foreign nationals, they felt particularly vulnerable at times of international conflict.
