Printed Ephemera — 1907-03-08
A Great Meeting. Exeter Hall, March 8, 1907. Women's Social and Political Union.
Printed handbill announcing a 'Votes for Women' meeting, organised by the Women's Social and Political Union, to be held in Exeter Hall on 8 March 1907. The meeting was organised to coincide with the second reading of W.H. Dickenson's Women's Enfranchisement Bill in the House of Commons. That evening, however, as the meeting took place the private member's bill was 'talked out of the Commons' and disappeared from the agenda. Chairing the meeting at Exeter Hall was the Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst and speakers included Israel Zangwill, Philip Snowden, Keir Hardie, and William Bull, their presence indicating the close links between the WSPU and the Independent Labour Party and radical politicans in the early years of the Suffragette campaign. Just months later, however, these links began to loosen with the resignation of Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst from the ILP in the Summer of 1907.
