Printed Ephemera — 1914; 1914-07-16
Great Meeting of Women, Holland Park Hall. July 16, 1914. Women's Social and Political Union.
Printed handbill announcing a 'Great Meeting of Women' at Holland Park Hall on July 16, 1914. Organised by the Women's Social and Political Union, the meeting was due to include an appearance and speech by the Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst who had been released on licence from Holloway prison under the terms of the Cat and Mouse Act. The flyer includes the price of ticket for the event that would have been organised primarily to raise funds for the beleaguered WSPU campaign. On the reverse of the flyer, printed in purple, are handwritten notes probably written during the meeting.
This, the last mass meeting to be held by the WSPU, was organised by Mildred Mansel, who as cousin of the Chief Liberal Whip, was thought not to be at risk of arrest. As Mrs Pankhurst, weakened by hunger-strike, left Nurse Pine's nursing home on a stretcher to attend the meeting she was rearrested by the Police. Annie Kenney in disguise managed to successfully evade the police and make a rousing speech at the meeting that led to promises of £16 350 in donations from those attending.
