A Conference of Women. Caxton Hall. Women's Social and Political Union.
Printed handbill announcing a 'conference of women' organised by the Women's Social and Political Union at Caxton Hall on 20 March 1907. This event, also referred to as the Second Women's Parliament, was called in response to the failure of W.H.Dickenson's Private Member's Women's Suffrage Bill that was 'talked out' of the House of Commons on 8th March. Speakers at this meeting included Margaret Macmillan, Charlotte Despard, Nellie Martel and Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence. Following the conference a delegation, led by Viscountess Harberton marched to the House of Commons demanding admission. The ensuing confrontation with the police resulted in the arrest and imprisonment of 67 Suffragettes.
