Letter
Admiral William Penn wrote this letter 'from on bord ye Swiftsure at Barbados, this 31st of March, 1655' to General Venables. Cromwell had sent the two men to capture the Caribbean from Spain. Penn led the naval campaign, while General Robert Venables commanded the troops. After failing to take Barbados, they sailed for Jamaica and in May seized control of the island from the Spanish. This initial British conquest of Jamaica affected the whole future of the Caribbean. Penn's eldest son, also called William, was the founder of Pennsylvania in America.
