Printed Ephemera — 1906-07-13
Public Meeting. Railway Approach, Shepherd's Bush. July 13th, 1906.
Printed handbill announcing a public meeting to be held at the Railway Approach, Shepherd's Bush on July 13th, 1906. The meeting was organised on the occasion of the sale of the Suffragette Dora Montefiore's goods, seized by the government in lieu of the taxes she refused to pay. Dora's refusal to pay tax was part of the ' no taxation without representation' policy adopted by many Suffragettes. Those who refused to pay taxes, in protest against the Government's refusal to allow them, as taxpayers, to vote and thereby influence how their taxes were spent resulted in the seizure of goods to the value of the taxes owed. Those goods seized were usually sold at public sales where fellow Suffragettes would buy back the items for return to their owners.
In 1909 Dora became a founding member of the Tax Resistance League. The League, conducted a campaign of organised resistance to taxation and attracted primarily middle- class professional women, such as Doctors who were liable to income tax and rates. By 1910 it had 104 members.
