Printed Ephemera — 1914
Miss Christabel Pankhurst on National Defence. London Opera House. Women's Social and Political Union.
Printed handbill announcing a public meeting to be addressed by the Suffragette leader Christabel Pankhurst. Organised by the Women's Social and Political Union the meeting took place at the London Opera House on Tuesday 8th September 1914. The flyer notes that Christabel was due to speak in favour of 'a vigorous National defence against the German peril'. This was Christabel's first public appearance after her return to England from France. Her 'pro-war' jingoistic speech, was the first formal announcement that the WSPU would now channel all its efforts, resources and campaigning skills into supporting the 'war effort.'
