Votes for Women. Never!
This handbill announces a demonstration to be held in Trafalgar Square on the 16 July 1910 against female suffrage. The demonstration was organised by the Anti-Suffrage campaign in protest against The Conciliation Bill, referred to as the Women's Suffrage Bill, that was being debated in the House of Commons. The Bill proposed to extend the franchise (right to vote) to women who were responsible for 'the premises they occupied', but it was defeated in the Commons and never passed. The phrase on the handbill 'you are in urgent danger' refers to the argument that female suffrage could place the country in 'danger' as women, who had no knowledge of politics, used their vote irresponsibly.
