Figure with basket and cover
This porcelain figure of a Black woman beside a basket was manufactured at Bow Pottery. It is a copy of an original made at the Meissen factory in Dresden, Germany. The woman wears a skirt but has bare breasts, so is dressed for a hot climate. The basket would have contained sweetmeats. The ornament is a visual reminder of the link between the sugar that flavoured the sweetmeats and the enslaved people that provided the sugar.
