Saxon & Medieval — Early 14th century
Coin, penny
The head of Edward II appears on this penny. The king was known for his close relationship to Piers Gaveston, a member of the royal household. Some have interpreted this to mean that Edward may have been gay or bisexual. Many powerful people were jealous of the favour shown to Gaveston by the King, and he was forced into exile three times, excommunicated and eventually beheaded.
