Charity flag, flagday emblem
World War I charity flag with lapel pin issued to raise money for the Salvation Army's war fund. On one side the paper emblem is lithographed in red, white and blue with an image of a Salvation Army Ambulance with the motto 'A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed'. On the reverse is a lithograph of a soldier's rest hut with the motto 'In the war zone sympathy, comfort, security. The emblem was purchased by Ernest King from a charity street seller on a designated 'Salvation Army Flag Day' on 7th June 1918 that raised funds to provide ambulances to transport injured servicemen and rest and recreation huts for those serving on the front line.
Flagdays were an established feature of London life during World War I. Each charity was alloted specific flagdays where volunteers, often women and young girls, would stand on the streets carrying a collecting tin and tray of emblems offered in exchange for a cash donation.
