Social History — C. 1914-1918
Toy soldier
The London firm Britains Ltd made this set of toy soldiers. They are dressed in the khaki battle uniform worn by British infantry soldiers fighting in World War I.
In the years leading up to the outbreak of war in 1914, Britains led the way in developing the manufacture of toy soldiers. The standing soldiers have one moveable arm, a modelling innovation introduced by the firm in the late 1890s.
