Printed Ephemera — 1740-1760
Cloe
In the mid 18th Century songs were written to be performed at pleasure gardens such as Vauxhall or Sadlers Wells. The songs had to hold the attention of a large crowd of people in a large open space. Love songs such as this one were popular and were often reworked many times featuring different heroines. This songsheet, Chloe, is illustrated with an engraving by Benjamin Cole featuring a woman walking through a garden with a fountain on the left and two allegorical figures on the right.
