The London Gazette
The London Gazette was first published in November 1665 as the Oxford Gazette while the court of Charles II was residing in Oxford due to fear of the London plague. The first London edition of the paper was published in 5 February 1666.
Published by ‘authority’ the Gazette provided an official record of government affairs and also carried official notices, such as Royal Proclamations, official a, Granting appointments, Royal assent to Bills of Parliament, military honours and personal and corporate insolvency. The focus of this edition also reflects public interest in international affairs and conflicts within Europe.
