Post-Medieval — 15th century
Miniature bridge-spouted tripod ewer
A complete spouted toy ewer with short tripod feet. The base is slightly damaged. It is decorated on each side with a large shield incorporating two smaller shields in its design. It was fashionable in England in the 15th and 16th centuries to have heraldic devices and coats of arms decorating all kinds of personal possessions. This toy jug imitates full-sized pottery jugs that were available at the time; the feet are short stumps like those typically found on London-type ware pitchers. Ewers would have been used for pouring water for washing diners' hands after meals. Reference: Forsyth, H. & Egan, G. (2005): Toys, Trifles & Trinkets.
