Roman — Modern; 1984
Model port
Model of the Roman port, commissioned for London Museum's Roman Gallery in 1984. It depicts the quayside to the east of London's first bridge in about AD 100. A new timber quay is being constructed out into the river. Ships are unloading goods from abroad onto the quayside and the goods are being stored in warehouses alongside. Behind the warehouses various trades are happening - a cooper, blacksmith, tanner, leatherworker and chandler. There are inns and shops serving customers.
The model is based on information from various archaeological excavations along Lower Thames Street. Scale 1:72
