Computer
The Apple II series was one of the first micro-computers to be widely used by businesses. The 11e was an 'enhanced' model and became a popular choice for schools. Users could also play computer games, such as Pacman and Donkey Kong on these machines.
This particular machine was originally used by the news agency Reuters to write data retrieval programmes for its network computers. Reuters was founded by the German immigrant Paul Julius Reuter in London in 1851. Reuter's telegraph office was at the Royal Exchange in the City of London. At the heart of the financial world, he was able to transmit news between London and Paris via the Dover-Calais submarine telegraph cable.
After being replaced by faster machines at Reuters, this computer was used by Art and Science Limited, a software company founded in Islington in 1988. At this firm the machine was used for training and music production. By the early 1990s the computer had become a personal word processor. Apple stopped manufacturing the 11e model in 1993.
