Working History — C. 1735
Watch, verge watch
This gold pair-cased watch features a verge escapement and a quarter repeat. Both the inner and outer cases are richly decorated with foliate designs as is the champlevé dial. The outer case is unlikely to have been made for this watch.
Although marked 'London' it is probable that this watch was manufactured on the continent and sold through a retail outlet in London. There were watchmakers named Dufour working in Geneva and Paris in this period. One Dufour was associated with Voltaire's watchmaking factory at Ferney near Geneva.
