Token for Duke of Bedford Estate
silver token or 'pass' for the Duke of Bedford estate. The pass is engraved with the Ducal coat of arms of Bedford (family name Russell), namely: 'Argent a Lion rampant Gules on a Chief sable three Escallops of the first. The Crest: A Goat statant Argent armed and unguled Or. The Supporters:Dexter: a Lion rampant Gules gorged with a Collar Argent charged with three Escallops Sable; Sinister: a Goat Argent armed unguled and bearded Or. And the Motto: 'CHE SERA SERA' ('What will be, will be'). Reverse inscribed 'No. 588'.
The fourth Earl of Southampton first started to develop the area around his mansion in modern Bloomsbury in the 1650s, pioneering a trend for hereditary landlords to develop new London streets and whole neighbourhoods in the capital.
