Theatre costume, Peter Pan costume
The actor Pauline Chase wore this costume when she played the role of Peter Pan at the Duke of Yorks theatre in London's West End in 1911. The outfit consists of a rust coloured suede jacket and belt with gold-coloured buckle, and net wings attached to sleeves. Dark brown suede shorts, green satin shoes, green knitted silk tights and a wooden theatrical dagger with a silver painted blade and green painted crudely carved handle.
J M Barrie's play Peter Pan was first performed at the Duke of York's Theatre on 27 December 1904. Popular with families the play returned annually to the West End for the Christmas season. Traditionally the role of Peter Pan was always played by female actors. Pauline Chase first played Peter Pan in 1906 and returned annually to the Duke of York's theatre to resume her role until 1913.
