Plane, torus profile moulding plane
This torus profile moulding plane was made by Joseph Sims and owned by W Gray. It forms part of a large set of moulding planes housed in an early 19th century toolchest. A metal name plate found in one of the drawers of the toolchest is marked 'W Gray, Cavendish Grove, Wandsworth Road'. Gray was living in this area in the mid 19th century. However, many of the boxwood planes, stamped with his owner's mark, were made twenty or thirty years earlier.
The profile of the plane allows for the shaping of an elliptical section. This was used especially in the creation of room and hall skirting boards which often had this distinctive profile.
