Decorative arts — 1772-1800
Box
The Pantheon in Oxford Street opened in 1772 as a fashionable indoor entertainment venue. When the pleasure gardens were closed in the late autumn, winter and spring months, assemblies were held here as well as masked balls and concerts.
The lid of this oval enamel box is decorated with a simple sepia coloured transfer print of the fornt elevation of the Pantheon with the added words 'A Present from London'. The base of the box is enamelled in light blue. The interior is white enamel with a mirror inside the lid. Such boxes were made in the Midlands especially at Bilston and Birmingham and sold by London shopkeepers as souvenirs.
