Decorative arts — 1770-1800
Box
In the 18th century, St Paul's Cathedral was one of London's main tourist attractions. It dominated the skyline like no other building in the metropolis. From virtually any vantage point in the City, the dome of St.Paul's could be seen and admired.
The lid of this oval enamel box is decorated with a simple sepia coloured transfer print of St Paul's Cathedral with the added words 'A Trifle from London'. and 'Front of St Paul's London'. The base of the box is enamelled in pink. The interior is white enamel with a mirror inside the lid. Such boxes were made in the Midlands especially at Bilston and Birmingham and sold by London shopkeepers as souvenirs.
