Bracelet clasp
One of a pair of bracelet clasps made of gold. It has a closed-back oval enclosing a glass covered painted miniature on ivory. The painting is a portrait of a man wearing a cherry red coat trimmed with silver braid. On his lapel is the Spanish device of the letter ‘s’ impaled by a nail, meaning ‘esclavo’ or slave. ‘Clavo’ is the Spanish for nail. This could denote adherence to a religious sect, or be a punning reference to his married state. The portrait is bordered with flat cut garnets.
The matching clasp depicts a woman, 62.136/16. The clasps may have been made on the Continent.
