Working History — C. 1781
Pistol, blunderbuss pistol
Pistols of this type were favoured by travellers for personal protection from highwaymen and footpads. Brass barrels had the advantage that they were less likely to rust in wet weather. As flintlock weapons were prone to misfire in damp conditions, pistols were often fitted with a spring bayonet. The bayonet was activated by pulling the trigger guard backwards, which released the lethally sharp blade at high speed.
