Pistol, pocket pistol
Pocket pistols were typically carried by travellers for personal protection against highwaymen and footpads. The maker of this unusual triple-barrelled flintlock pocket pistol, John Fox Twigg, came to London from Grantham and established a gunmaking business in Charing Cross around 1755. He worked as a contractor for the East India Company between 1772 and 1789. The barrels are fixed and were fired by adjusting the position of a tap inside the pan. The tap was bored with touch holes and could be positioned to direct the spark into each of the three barrels. The position of the tap is adjusted using the switch on the side.
