Pistol, coach pistol
Coach pistols were fitted with brass barrels to prevent them rusting in the rain. Coachmen carried pistols for protection against highwaymen.
This flintlock pistol was manufactured by John Brown who had a shop on the Strand. Brown went bankrupt in 1803 but began trading again in Lincoln's Inn Fields two years later. He had this weapon proofed (test-fired with an overweight charge) at the Tower of London. All weapons had to be proofed by law to guarantee their safety.
