Pistol, duelling pistol
This is one of a pair of flintlock duelling pistols manufactured by Henry Osborn, a Birmingham gunmaker. At the time they were made Osborn was a sword cutler for the East India Company and the Board of Ordnance at the Tower of London.
This pistol was 'proofed' (test-fired with an overweight charge) at the Tower to guarantee its safety. The Tower's proof house offered a private service for gunmakers as a rival to that of the London Gunmakers' Company. Osborn made this gun for a private client. It has a brass barrel to prevent rust damage in wet conditions.
