Post-Medieval — C.1703
Circular pair-cased verge watch
Wandering hour watches appeared on the market towards the end of the seventeenth century. The movement of this watch was manufactured by John Bushman, a German watchmaker who emigrated to London from Hagen. The pair case was made by John Willoughby, who seems to have been a regular supplier to Bushman.
On the dial plate the hour is the Roman numeral III, which moves from left to right until it reaches 60 minutes on the outer circle, at which point the numeral IV will appear at 0 minutes. The time on this watch is therefore 3.23. The inner circle of numbers represents quarters. Wandering hour watches typically featured a portrait of the monarch or the royal coat of arms on the dial or movement. The bottom half of the dial plate features a bust portrait of William III.
