Blood on Thunder Fording the Red Sea
This print satirizes the trial of Warren Hastings. The British Chancellor carries Hastings, in oriental dress, through a sea of blood where mutilated Indian corpses float. Hastings was governor-general of Bengal for 13 years, but resigned when he was blamed for the growing problems of British India. He stood trial accused of forcing Indian rulers to pay extortionate taxes, of taking large bribes and of starting wars. Many considered that he was a scapegoat for the greedy policies of the East India Company, and he was eventually acquitted.
