Industry and Idleness: plate 5
From Hogarth's satrical print series comparing the relative fortunes of the Idle and Industrious apprentices. In this print Tom Idle's decline continues until he is driven to a life at sea. Being rowed out to his ship, another sailor taunts him with a cat-of-nine-tail (used for punishment at sea) and points to the gibbet where he will no doubt end up. The background is probably meant to represent Millwall on the Isle of Dogs.
