Photograph, gelatin silver print
Gelatin silver print, part of the Henry Grant photographs collection. From a group of images of Women's Protest March Against H-Bomb Tests, organised by the National Council for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons Tests, 29 Great James Street, London WC1, 12/3/1957. The image shows people marching with a sign and flowers. The caption on the reverse says, 'join us now stop h-bomb tests urge British Women. In an impressive demonstration to demand an end to h-bomb tests, over 1,000 women marched in silence through London to Trafalgar Square on Sunday, May 12, in pouring rain. The demonstration, organised by the National Council for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapon Tests, was joined by many - grandmothers to young schoolgirls - who had never before taken part in a public action of this kind. Here are two young women, dressed in black, part of the 50-strong contingent from Watford, Hertfordshire, who carried a wreath of laurels and white flowers which they later placed on the Cenotaph, the memorial to those who fell in the first World War'.
