Temple Church
The Temple Church, off Fleet Street, was founded in the 12th century as the headquarters of the Knights Templar. This was an order of French soldier monks first established in Jerusalem. From the 11th century, European knights journeyed to the part of the Middle East known as the Holy Land to fight Muslim troops who were advancing their borders westwards towards Europe. Today Temple Church is best known for its nine knight's tombs, each topped with a reclining statue representing its occupant.
