The South View of Barnes
Jean Baptiste Claude Chatelain ( 1710?- 1771) produced a large number of views of London in the latter part of the eighteenth century. This print engraved by J Roberts is likely to be for a publication entitled ' "Fifty Small Original, and Elegant Views of the Most Splendid Churches, Villages, Rural Prospects ... Adjacent to London" (London, 1750), illustrated by Chatelain.
Born in London Chatelain was of French Huguenot descent and was soon recognised as being an accomplished landscape draughtsman.Barnes has some of the oldest riverside housing in London, located in southwest London, on a loop of the Thames with Hammersmith at the north.
