Addington, Surry
This print depicts the Church of St Mary, Addington, Croydon. There has been a church on this site since 1080. It was held by the Lords of the Manor at Addington who by th early ninettenth century were the Archbishops of Canterbury who used the Manor as their second official residence. Five Archbishops are buried in the churchyard at Addington including Archbishop Howley ( 1828-48) who played a large part in extending and repairing the church and manor and Archbishop Tait.
In 1837 the parish of Addington was transferred to Canterbury.
