Dancing Dolls
An illustration from an extra-illustrated volume of 'The Cries of London' by J.T. Smith.
This boy was a street performer who played a flute and drum while the rope attached to his knee operated the two dancing dolls. He was one of a dozen boys from Lucca in Italy who made his home in London when peace was declared with France in 1815, ending the Napoleonic wars. The text accompanying the image comments that migrants from Lucca ‘play the street organ, carry images, or attend dancing bears or dolls.’
