All in full bloom
A print from an extra-illustrated volume of 'The Cries of London' by J.T. Smith. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, bad economic conditions in mountain villages in northern Italy forced young peasants to seek a living abroad. Statuette makers and pedlars from Lucca in Tuscany came to Paris and London to ply their trade. This vendor carries a tray of potted plants native to Lucca and artificial flowers. The birds perched on them are made of wax. Artificial flower making was poorly paid, but the work could be done at home.
