Photograph, gelatin silver print
Gelatin silver print, part of the Henry Grant photographs collection. From a group of images of the 'School for Handicapped Children', 24/9/1957. The image shows a queue of individuals lined up around a swimming pool. A child in the queue is in a wheelchair being accompanied by an adult. The typed caption attached on the reverse reads 'Mr. Pastry Pool No 5. With money given to the "Mr. Pastry Pool Fund" a hydrotherapy pool has been installed at Franklin Delano Roosevelt School for physically handicapped children and was officially opened last weekend (May 27) by H.E. the United States Ambassador the Hon. David K.E. Bruce. The pool, 30 feet long by 15 feet wide, and four feet deep, will be used by learner swimmers as well as for hydrotherapy. It is the fifth pool of its kind provided as a result of the initiative of Mr Richard Hearne ("Mr. Pastry."). Seeing the new pool for the first time are some of the children and their parents, and some of the visitors to the official opening.' The word handicapped is no longer used, as it is an offensive term.
