Trader selling from the back of a van in Cricklewood
Gelatin silver print, part of the Henry Grant photographs collection. The image shows Cricklewood in North London which was once an industrial centre with companies such as Smiths crisps, the Phoenix Telephone Company, Bentley and Rolls Royce all having factories here. However in the 1960s industry began to decline and these companies left the area leaving unemployment and homelessness. This trader is selling household goods from his van and customers can be seen gathered around. Interestingly in the background a Tesco store can be seen unusually named a ‘Deco’market. Note on the reverse says, 'Auctioning household goods fro the back of a van in Cricklewood, London NW2'.
