Our mission

We are here to enrich the understanding and appreciation of London and all its people – past, present, future.

A home for learning, exploration and adventure, we aspire to be a force for good in London, as London must be for the world.

Our Strategic Plan 2023–2028

Our plan sets the direction for the most exciting time in our history. By 2028, we will have become London Museum, a shared place in the middle of it all where all our city's stories cross and collide.

Visitors to Smithfield will be able to explore our historic and contemporary galleries in the General Market or head to West Poultry Avenue for cutting-edge, real-time multimedia exhibits. Our Research Centre will be established, and work on the temporary exhibition spaces, learning centre and collections stores in the Poultry Market will be well underway.

As planning for Smithfield moves into delivery, London Museum Docklands will continue welcoming visitors to its site, nestled in a historic Grade I-listed warehouse in the vibrant East End. Here, visitors can discover London’s river, port and people including the history of trade and cultural exchange, the powerful stories of sugar and slavery, Victorian Sailortown, and our free permanent galleries and family activities year-round.

Our strategic objectives

We're aiming to:

  • build our new future
  • reach more people than ever before
  • stretch thinking
  • engage all young Londoners
  • transform ourselves for a better world
