Improving our records

We're actively looking for ways to improve our object records, including using artificial intelligence to generate alt text for some object images. If you think we've made a mistake or have information about an object that you'd like to share, you can fill in the details below.

Our collections contain objects and information which some people may consider sensitive or offensive. Some of the text was written in past decades and reflects the language and social attitudes of the time. Find out more

Mariano Bovi. Engraver, Publisher and Art Dealer. Native of Naples, moved to London to study under Francesco Bartolozzi in 1781. Specialised in colour-prints for furniture upholstery. Trade card in Banks Collection (Banks 59.25) advertises "Mno. Bovi, Engraver & Print Seller. Prints Framed & Glazed. 207, Piccadilly near St. James's Church." In 1786 Bovi resided at 2 Leicester Square and then later at 81 Great Titchfield Street (1790), 207 Piccadilly (1792-5, 1798-1799) and 2 Piccadilly (1801-1803 ). His catalogue refers to 'prints on satin, velvet, muslin and calico to be used to upholster furniture; transparencies on calico, paper, etc.' (BM).

Philip Sykas confirmed (March 2017) that the other example engraved by Mariano Bovi is in the V&A: inventory no. 1871-1899. It is dated to 1799. It is illustrated p.113 in Museé Galliera , 'Le Coton et la Mode: 1000ans d’aventures' (Paris Museés: 2000).

Information from Mary Schoeser (April 2017): Also referenced online (with discrepancies in dimensions and materials) as follows:
