Napoleon III yielding his sword to Wilhelm I
This handkerchief commemorates the surrender of France to Germany at the end of the Franco-Prussian War, in 1870. The short war between the two nations had been the result of a territorial dispute over the border provinces of Alsace and Lorraine; and resulted in the French army's defeat. The handkerchief is printed with captions in both French and German, and shows the defeated French emperor Napoleon III handing his sword to the victorious German kaiser, Wilhelm I
