Underskirt, petticoat

Improving our records

We're actively looking for ways to improve our object records, including using artificial intelligence to generate alt text for some object images. If you think we've made a mistake or have information about an object that you'd like to share, you can fill in the details below.

Our collections contain objects and information which some people may consider sensitive or offensive. Some of the text was written in past decades and reflects the language and social attitudes of the time. Find out more

The fabric can be dated to 1740-43 but the construction is more like that of c. 1730.
See Zillah Halls, 'London Museum Catalogue of Women's Costume 1600-1750', London, 1970, no. 5, p. 30, plate 15, p. 23, and a pattern of the robe drawn by Janet Arnold pasted to the inside back cover of the catalogue.
Natalie Rothstein note: the yellow silk damask is of very high quality and is unfaded. There is an end of piece with a chequerboard band and an inscription, '204 LF Watt Holl 37 1/4 yds. B de'. The final letters are smudged and could be read as R & C or G. This is not easy to interpret. It could be pattern 204; L F Watt might be the journeyman who wove it or the customer; 37 1/4 yds could be the length of the piece; while the final initials should be the name of the firm (the 1740 London Trade Directory & the length of fabric in the dress should be checked). NB. in the later Batchelor, Ham & Perigal books there are similar inscriptions which might help to elucidate this one. Check with a thread counter to see if the damask is a satin of 8 or 5, and the warp count. Width of material: 19 1/2"; selvage: 5/16" with 9 outer cords and 2 red and 1 white stripe; repeat: W. 9 3/4", L. 30 1/2".
Additional Notes: the changes made to the petticoat would/should not hinder ensemble’s use for display
