Crowds outside the gates of Buckingham Palace
Crowds outside Buckingham Palace in the early 1950s. This photograph was taken as part of a series on ‘street furniture’ and the lamps look striking against the cloudy sky. The gilded railings and gates were designed by the Bromsgrove Guild of Applied Arts. Unfortunately we do not know the exact date of this photograph so we do not know whether the crowds had gathered to watch a ceremonial piece like the changing of the guards or whether the people had come together to witness a more significant event.
