Scarf
A deconstructed woollen scarf bought from Joseph by Kim Philpotts in around 1983. It forms one of a number of items of clothing donated to the museum by Philpotts, providing an interesting insight into one woman's wardrobe during the 1980s and 1990s.
Philpotts grew up in Stratford Upon Avon in the 1960s but moved to London in 1982. Her clothing represents fashionable designer and high street clothing in London during this period, and while the receipts for these items have since been lost, Philpotts can still remember where many of them were bought.
This scarf was bought by Philpotts from Joseph's flagship store on Sloane Street in Knightsbridge, which had been opened in 1979. Apricot was an unusual colour choice for Philpotts, as she admits she normally only bought clothing in blue, black, grey and white. Joseph was established in London in 1972 by Joseph Ettedgui and his family, and became renowned for a modern and minimalist approach to womenswear.
