Printed Ephemera — 1899
The 'New Cut' Coon
Sheet music for the music hall song 'The 'new cut' coon' written and composed by Charles Collins and Edgar Bateman and and sung by the music hall artiste Gus Elen. The colour chromolithographed cover includes a portrait of the singer and includes Gus Elen's signature. The song is about a white man who is often covered in coal dust, and finds himself mistaken for a black man. Several of the racially offensive lyrics are represented in illustrations on the cover.
Born in Pimlico in 1862 Ernest Augustus Elen was one of the most popular 'coster comedians' of the music hall.
