General Charles Fleetwood
General Charles Fleetwood (c1618-1692), parliamentarian and soldier. He married Cromwell's widowed daughter in 1652 and served as commander in chief in Ireland from 1652 to 1655. He helped force Richard Cromwell to dissolve the protectorate Parliament in 1659 but was forced briefly to restore the pre-protectorate Rump Parliament until they withdrew his commission as commander in chief when he expelled them. When Monck marched on London, Fleetwood prevaricated, was arraigned before parliament and excluded from Charles II's Act of Indemnity, being forced into a quiet retirement in Stoke Newington.
