Saxon & Medieval — Medieval; 13th-14th century
Sheath
Incomplete leather knife sheath with the handle area moulded to distinguish it from the blade area. There is impressed decoration on the front and back and this is separated into zones also reflecting the handle and blade areas. The front is decorated with panels of scrolling foliate motifs which have finer linear and stabbed dot decoration. The back has simple impressed lines and panels of fine diagonal impressed lines on the blade area. There is a centre back seam and edge/grain stitch holes. There is an illustration of this sheath when more complete (Ward-Perkins, J.B., London Museum Medieval Catalogue, London, 1940, 192 & fig 61, no. 3)
