Printed Ephemera — 1905-1914
Photograph of Suffragette Mrs Cobden Sanderson
In 1906 Anne Cobden-Sanderson served time in Holloway prison for obstructing the police in the execution of their duty. She was a member of the London Society for Women’s Suffrage , the National Union of Women’s Suffrage and then in 1905 the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). In October 1906 she was arrested after demonstrating outside the House of Commons. In court she said “I am a law breaker because I want to be a law maker.” In 1909 Anne helped to establish the Tax Resistance League and she worked tirelessly until the outbreak of the First World War, making speeches, marching, and taking part in militant protests.
