Suffragettes Dressed in Replica Prison Uniform
Postcard with photograph of a group of suffragettes dressed in prison uniform. In the back row from left are Edith New, Mary Clarke, who was Emmeline Pankhurst's younger sister, Leslie Lawless and a blurred figure. In the front row, from left, are Rona Robinson, Dora Marsden, possibly Dorothy Radclyffe and Theresa Garnett. The majority, and probably all, were members of the Women's Social and Political Union and had been imprisoned for their suffragette activities. Suffragettes were often imprisoned for minor offences, because they refused to pay a fine, as a political protest.
